55: Coffee with Ruth Everhart Part 1

Everhart3I was quickly out of my depth in this interview with Rev. Ruth Everhart. 37 years ago, in her senior year in college, Ruth and her housemates experienced a traumatic event. At gunpoint they were held captive, robbed and raped. In this two part interview Ruth shares insights, realizations, and questions about her pilgrimage from college, to seminary, to pastoring, to marriage and parenthood, and forward. All of this just before she publishes “Ruined: A Memoir.”

RSS PointerPart 1 adheres to our show’s usual format. Part 2 is the necessary follow up.

Everhart5As Ruth noted in Part 1, bringing up this experience of sexual assault is “like dropping a turd in the punch bowl.” It’s a conversation stopper, at least at first. Sexual assault is not an enjoyable talk. It is, however, extremely important. As we say often on our show, silence perpetuates the problem.

Ruth is a member of the RevGalBlogPals and the author of “Chasing the Divine in the Holy Land.” She is also the opening contributor to “There’s A Woman In The Pulpit: Christian Clergywomen Share Their Hard Days, Holy Moments & the Healing Power of Humor” edited by Martha Spong (2015). Ruth’s blog is called Love the Work (Do the Work).
